Adelaide has had many nicknames over the years, from “the Athens of the south” (a nod to our Mediterranean climate and lifestyle) to “the 20-minute city” (because getting around just isn’t a problem). We’re also famous as Australia’s home to great food, the arts and new ideas.
What visitors most notice, however, are the sense of light and space, and the range of things you can do in a day without feeling rushed. That’s what makes Adelaide a great convention city, and why both Lonely Planet and The New York Times rated it in the top 10 places to see in 2015.
It’s an easy city to enjoy, whether you prefer 5-star dining, quirky laneway bars, exploring the bustling Central Market, cycling in the parklands, strolling in the picturesque Adelaide Hills or relaxing on a stretch of white sandy beach just 20 minutes (that figure again) from the CBD.

The City of Adelaide is surrounded by a green belt known as the Park Lands and is a blend of historic buildings, wide streets, vibrant public spaces, arts, culture, cafes and restaurants. Adelaide is easy to get around either on foot, by bike or use local transport. Adelaide is a short trip by plane from both Melbourne (1.5 hours) and Sydney (2 hours).
South Australia is the wine and seafood capital of Australia; where the Murray River meets the sea; and the gateway to the South Australian outback and at the heart of all this is Adelaide. Whether you have just a few days or longer there is so much you can see and do. You can base yourself in Adelaide for your entire stay and go on day trips to the surrounding regions of Barossa, Adelaide Hills and Fleurieu Peninsula. Or journey further afield and discover the Flinders Ranges, Murray River, Kangaroo Island and the Eyre Peninsula using flights, tours or hire cars.
